The Phantom Files (Prologue)
The blue and red lights lit up the night in a wretched and ominous symphony of flashes. There were no less than 4 police cars surrounding the jewelry store, and 7 different police officers talking to witnesses, victims, and the manager of the store. Only a few minor items had been stolen…but the worst crime of all was the woman behind the counter, where blood dripped like a trickling stream. She was about 30 years old, blonde hair and pale brown eyes. Her eyes were still wide open and her mouth slightly agape. She lay upon a pool of blood, her hands stained red with it, and a bullet wound in the front of her skull. Her lovely yellow car

Ollie sat down across from his partner at the booth in the bar. She was laying with her head on the table, a beer bottle in her weary hand and her other arm draped under her face to hide it under her mane of raven black hair. Ollie sighed and lifted his own bottle to his lips. This was his only drink of the night…someone had to drive home after all. But LeeAnne was already on her 5th bottle.
“That’s enough, Richie…”
“Oh it’s RICHIE now huh!?” LeeAnne snapped, lifting her head only to take another gulp of beer. Her cheeks were a little red and her eyes were clearly drooping. “Earlier it

“Why do you have all this old stuff?” LeeAnne asked, as she shoved dusty boxes out of her way. The wooden floor creaked under her feet as she inched through the attic. Ollie was behind her, sorting through objects in an old cardboard box. “I mean, half of it you’d probably never use anymore.”
“I don’t use this stuff…but I like to hold onto things. Hard to let go, ya know?” Ollie smirked. “Like look at this! It’s my old baseball glove.” Ollie pulled out a glove and dusted it off, putting his hand inside and stretching his fingers in it. “Maybe sometime we should pl

“My goodness…she’s really dead?” Dr. Reynolds asked. He was a tall man with a small beard under his chin and a balding head, though there were still some tufts of grey hair on his head. He looked to be about 50 or 60, and he wore a simple button down shirt with a sweater vest over it. He had on thick glasses and seemed like your typical shrink, though right now he looked very distraught…but LeeAnne and Ollie weren’t too surprised by his response.
“I’m afraid so. Her and her fiancé.” Ollie explained.
“That’s horrible…and she was such a nice young lady.” Dr. Re

“I don’t understand it…” LeeAnne muttered, walking over the crime scene. Police moved around the room, taking pictures of the body, the blood, the gun, and everything else like a gang of mad paparazzi spooks. Ollie was making notes on the condition of the body in the mean time.
“Suicides usually feel that way.” Ollie muttered.
“Why’d he kill himself?” LeeAnne asked.
“Guilt maybe?” Ollie asked. “The M.E thinks he’s been dead for a day…maybe he got home from the scene of the crime, realized what he’d done, and couldn’t live with himself?”

It was called “The Box.” It’s the interrogation room where detectives interrogate suspects. Ollie and LeeAnne both approached it in various ways, but they both felt like half of their job revolved around this room. The walls were a deep milk white and there was only one window. A large one way window located on the far wall so people could look in and see the interrogation, but the suspect couldn’t look out and see who was looking in. There were two chairs and one metal table. One chair faced the window, and the other chair faced the opposite wall. It was usually the suspect who faced the window, and that was the direc

Ollie walked downstairs, toothbrush still in his mouth and his shirt barely buttoned over his body. The sleep still clearly caked on his eyes and bristles covered his cheeks and chin, making him look like a trailer park drunk more so than a detective of the NYPD. He let out a loud yawn as he pulled his pants up and tightened the belt around them with one hand.
“I hate Mondays…” He grumbled.
“Tell me about it.” LeeAnne answered. Ollie glanced down the stairs to the den where he could see LeeAnne laying on the couch, only dressed enough that she had on a tank top over her bra and her pants barely pulled up to he

Ollie and LeeAnne stepped up to the front door of Officer Jessie Fravel, the owner of Romeo. Ollie shot a glance back at LeeAnne, as if making sure she was okay. LeeAnne nodded her head slowly as Ollie pounded on the door. It took a moment, but soon a young woman with auburn hair opened the door.
“Yes?”
“Detectives Oliver Newman and LeeAnne Hunter.” Ollie introduced. “We’re here to ask you a few questions about the incident with Romeo and Philip Gates?”
“Internal Affairs was here yesterday evening to talk to me.” She snapped.
“We understand that. We’re just following up.

“So what’s the report, Dr. Cheng?” Ollie asked. It had been two days since the initial investigation, and Cheng had been given all day yesterday to autopsy and examine the body of Romeo, who now was on the table and on display. LeeAnne had elected not to come…the sight of Romeo in this state probably wouldn’t sit well with her anyway. Cheng glanced up and then back at the dog, his autopsy goggles on.
“The commissioner calls me two days ago, ordering the autopsy of a K-9 unit dog, expecting me to find something for your case. Just WHAT kind of pull do you have with the PC?” Ollie just smirked at Cheng

LeeAnne knelt down, petting Reagan on his tiny head as she fed him a biscuit. She was waiting on Ollie to come downstairs for work. She’d gotten a call from the chief and were getting ready to head out.
“You almost ready, you slow poke?” LeeAnne called out.
“I’m getting my coat, damn it!” Ollie called back, marching down the stairs. “If you’re done playing with Reagan, why don’t you go start the car?” LeeAnne just smiled as she went outside, telling Regan to stay put. As she made her way to the door, she saw Vivian standing beside the door with an umbrella.
“You’ll n
